about | Finding a Film’s Soul

What is the job?

“To find a film’s soul. Then help it whisper, sing, and sigh,” says composer and songwriter Matt Easton.

Matt’s evocative scoring work often blends electronic and organic elements. Depending on the project’s vision, cues can pull towards bold and catchy, or span into sound design-like textures: impressionistic, transparent, subtle. Whether layered or spacious, commercial or experimental, Matt aims to serve the story.

His credits include Last Chance for Eden, a documentary from Lee Mun Wah; the inclusion of the song “American Canyon” in the soundtrack for the film Broken Molds, directed by Jace Panebianco, and podcast theme music. Meanwhile, check out the pitch reel for the film Starboard, which features Matt’s cues.

Matt lives in Berkeley, California.
